3.  We have started multiplication and it would be great if you can keep drilling them at home or in the car on their 2 times tables (2 times 3, 2 times 6, 2 times 4, etc.).  We continue daily to review all concepts learned so far.

4.  Students should have read Charlottes Web by this coming Monday.  They are given 30 minutes per day in class.  If they have finished, they read their own choice for now.

Friday, 4 November 2016

Friday, Nov. 4

1.  There is a Legion Remembrance Day poster contest form to be signed by a parent.  We will be gluing the forms  to the back of the beautiful artwork the students have created and we will be submitting to the Legion to honour the veterans of all wars. If a parent signs the form and it is handed back to me by Monday or Tuesday, Nov. 7 or 8th, then I will be able to enter the art.  If the form is not back or you choose for your child NOT to enter the contest, then the art will not be entered.

6.  We started learning the easiest multiplication.  I showed them zero, one and two and five times tables.  At home, you can start asking them questions for quick recall so they can begin to memorize (ie- 2 times 3).  Grade 4s should definitely be working on this!

4.  Students should have 2 or more Human Body Science cards done by now.  Some have 5 or 6 done.  If students do not have 2 done, they should stay in for 10 minutes at lunch as cards are not allowed to go home. Students have been sick or not focusing well, or need to ask teacher for more help immediately if they are behind.

5.  Spelling- Many students are suddenly not following criteria with neatness, format, ruler, accuracy of target words, etc., even after weekly review and reminders.  Some students have been asked to redo this week to improve their marks. Weekly corrections can be done at school as time is given.  Some students are ignoring this and are getting behind. Spelling is a red duotanga and you can ask your child to show you!

6.  Candy for Kids!  Optionally send in...thanks for your generosity and encouragement to your kids to give to those less fortunate.  Food and candy will go on Friday to charity.

Friday, 28 October 2016

Friday, Oct. 28

1.  Thank you very much for sending in all the yummy treats for the kids.  We have about 30% left that i have wrapped up for Monday.  I have expressed to the kids how important it is to parents that students bring back the plastic containers!  The kids had lots of fun with 6 games; the best for me was watching them in groups try to memorize and design a dance to a Halloween poem or song they were given.  All groups performed and did an awesome job! They probably liked the Mummy dressing game the best!  Monday will be a calm day with little students doing a parade and our class eating leftovers and finishing our Halloween wordfinder and getting a pile of SS and Math done!

2.  No homework other than trying to read Charlottes Web novel to page 60.  Parents can help read to students if possible.  It is harder for grade 3 students to read and to understand.  We will be discussing elements of the story in 2 weeks.

3.  Leftover toilet paper and food for the Food Bank, as well as any candy kids donate on Tuesday and Wednesday will be taken on Friday.  Thanks for your generosity to those less fortunate.

Thursday, 27 October 2016

5.  Thanks to those who were able to send in food for the Food Bank.  I'll still collect for a couple days next week.  As well, kids can optionally bring some candy from their Trick or Treating to add to our Cans and Candy pile for the Food Bank.  Thanks for your support.

Thursday, 13 October 2016

Thursday, Oct. 13

1.  Please phone the office or come in to the school to look at the boards outside the office.  There, you can see and sign up for an open space for parent teacher interviews. If you can't make it on Oct. 19th or 20th, you can mail me or phone me. We can communicate this way or you can set up an alternate time on another week.

Thanks!

2.  Our class has Special Fridays sometimes.  We had Pyjama/Stuffie day last week.  This week, it is Gum day.  Usually with Special Fridays, we take about an hour or two to focus on the theme. For example, if it is Bring a Can Day, we draw Andy Warhol drawings of the soup cans using charcoal and pastel chalk.  We then discuss Pi in Math and figure out the circumference of the can.  We then roll the cans down a ramp for races to discuss Science concepts.
Sometimes, like with Gum Day, we watch a video on how gum is made. We guess in Science which type of gum will last longer...sugary or sugarless?  We have a gum blowing contest.
So thank you for helping support our Special Fridays!

3.  Please e-mail me a YES at sabraham@sd73.bc.ca to let me know you are reading some of these blogs!

Tuesday, 11 October 2016

4.  2 forms to go home today.

Friday, 7 October 2016

Friday, Oct. 7

1.  We have had a very busy week!  Lots of learning about:  nouns, capital placement, words attack skills, subtraction with borrowing, ordering, mapping skills with capitals and provinces, Forensic Science and fingerprint analysis, fingerprint art, print-making art with insects, poetry using similes, solving problems using hot/cold/cool methods, and increasing our vocabulary and spelling skills!

2.  The students deserve a 3 day weekend!  If they could practise reading aloud with expression and stopping/pausing appropriately, plus practise their basic Math skills for speed, that would be great and beneficial to them!

Have a nice weekend!

Parent/teacher interviews are Oct. 19th and 20th.  There are not a lot of after dinner spots; if a spot does not work for you, you can phone or mail me and make an appt. for the AM, lunchtime, or after-school on any date good for you.  I believe the office will put out a schedule in front of the school for sign ups.  Thanks.

Friday, 30 September 2016

Friday, Sept. 30

1.  Awesome job reading T. Fox facts aloud to the whole assembly!

2.  Highlights of day included:  running the route, watching a HOT/COLD/COOL problem solving video on how to deal with criticism, writing our first poem using similes and metaphors, reading aloud our paragraphs to the class, finishing our Poetry title page and trying to master borrowing with subtraction!  Many students cannot instantly answer  a basic adding or subtracting question, so this is making it very difficult for them to do the grade 3 and 4 work. Please quiz them aloud at home (17-5, etc.).

Have a great weekend!

Thursday, 29 September 2016

Thursday, Sept. 30

1.  Students have been practising their speaking skills and will give their Terry Fox facts to the audience at the short assembly tomorrow AM at about 9:20 before we all head out to run the route.  Bring good shoes for walking and running!

3.  4 step by step insect drawings are supposed to be done.  Kids can do 1 to 4 more if they wish...sheets were provided.  They are using these as helpers for their print making with paint next week.

Monday, 26 September 2016

Monday, Sept. 26

1.  2 Math sheets- many finished in class.
Some, if possible, have to do tonight for homework.  Please quiz the students on the basic skills of adding and subtracting.  If they don't know instantly the easy questions (7+8), then it takes them way longer to finish a grade 3 question (57+98).  Thanks for helping your child!

2.  Students have practised their Terry Fox lines for the assembly right before the run on Friday.  They wrote the lines out in their agenda.  Pls help them practise loudly and clearly, as there will be no mic.
3.  Thanks for all terry Fox donations.  Feel free to send in any if u have not done so and would like to.  Thanks.

Thursday, 22 September 2016

3.  Overdue yellow computer forms for the office.  School cannot allow students onto computers for certain reasons, such as doing projects on Google Chromebooks, without these signed. Thanks.
4. It is a big change to go from grade 3 to 4 or grade 4 to 5.  The students will be very tired, as they are working super hard all day.  We are covering Reading, Writing and Math daily, as well as many other subjects. While trying to enforce the rules and expectations of the classroom and age level, I am trying to be positive with all the great things they are accomplishing!
5.  I hope you and your child have a great 3 day weekend!  We will be learning about Project based curriculum ideas and philosophy for our Pro- D.

Wednesday, 21 September 2016

Students know that they certainly should not be having any HOT tantrums or COLD whining to get their way at school OR at home!

4.  Kids worked hard on some more review Math sheets and informal reading tests today.

3.  There is rarely homework, unless a student has not been focusing or working hard.  But I did send home 2 little bottles today and the students are supposed to fill them with anything related to Science (which means anything...seeds, rocks, smarties, already dead bugs, etc.).

4.  Our class is organizing the Terry Fox Run and collecting money for the next 2 weeks.  Then we are talking at the assembly and leading the run on Sept. 30th at 9:30.  Feel free to run with us.  Send money to help donate to the Terry Fox Foundation if you are able.  Thanks!

Monday, 27 June 2016

Monday, June 27

1.  Kids had a good day playing lots of kickball, having lots of Math contests and cleaning out their desks.  They should have come home with their duotangs and workbooks.  They have left their pencils, crayons, scissors, etc.. to work tomorrow and to decide if they will bring them home or leave at the back of the class in the "I LOST SOMETHING AND CAN CHECK THIS BIN" for next year's kids.  Maybe you can direct them on this decision.

2.  Many teachers and Mrs. Wickes give input as to where they feel a student would be best suited next year.  There are no requests permitted to Mrs. Wickes. However, if you have a preference for a certain class next year for your child, you can mail me at sabraham@sd73.bc.ca and I will try to relay your concerns or choices.

3.  Thanks to parents who sent a few goodies today, as for some kids, this was their last day.  Tomorrow, many kids have signed up to bring goodies, so thanks in advance.

4.  The year end slideshow and assembly is, I believe, at 10:30 on Wednesday.  Then, the kids get their report cards and leave about 12:00.
