Also, we will be outside the whole time, so make sure your child brings warm gear.

Friday 3 October 2014

Friday, Oct. 3

1.  Students did a great job with Terry Fox speeches in front of school today.  They also helped raise over $1000.00 for the Foundation.  A very good start to the year.

2.  Multiplication practice- 10-15 minutes per day for as long as it takes.

3.  Good copy of 3 Haikus- due Thursday, Oct. 9.  Most finished typing 1, 2 or 3 in computer room today.  Poems can be typed at home or hand written neatly as well.  Students also have to add pictures and color.  There will be time given in class next week and computers are available at lunch as well if they type as slow as I do.

Have a great weekend!

Thursday 2 October 2014

Thursday, Oct. 2

1.  Bring runners and jacket for Terry Fox Run at 9 AM.

2.  Multiplication practice- 10-15 min. per day.  Try it in the car.

3.  Subtraction sheet- due Friday.  Most kids finished in class.

4.  Addition text page- most kids finished in class.

5.  Scholastic orders will be ordered Friday.

6.  Daily schedule went home today- take a look if you like.

7.  Parent teacher interviews Oct. 15 and 16- 12:30 on.  Probably will be sign up near office but it is not out yet; I'll tell you when.

Wednesday 1 October 2014

Wednesday, Oct. 1

1.  Poetry title page- due Friday.
2.  2 Math quizzes- pls sign and return if possible.  Marks for multiplication facts quizzes will not be tabulated for report cards for at least a month.  But it would be great if most students took the time to memorize all of them within that time.  Pls try to help your child practise 15 minutes per night.  Otherwise, all the other work we do in Math will be more difficult.
3.  Scholastic orders- due Fri.
4.  Last call for Terry Fox donations- thanks so much for all that was sent in.
5.  Salmon Run Field trip- pls send form back ASAP with $5.00.  If you plan to join us, pls indicate on the form.  Even if you want to come for part of the day, that is fine.  I believe our educational learning centers are at 10:30 out there.  Done around 11:30, then lunch and hiking and observing and rolling in salmon.  Just joking.  That is what my dog does.

Tuesday 30 September 2014

Tuesday, Sept. 30

1.  Terry Fox Donations- thanks.
2.  Scholastic orders due: Friday.
3.  Grammar sheet- nouns- overdue now- most kids finished in class.
4.  Continents review sheet colored- overdue now- most kids finished in class.
5.  If kids do not finish assignment in class, it may be homework.  If he or she does not get the homework done, I ask that he or she try to get to library at 12:15 to complete it so he or she can get a better latter grade on report cards.  I try to check homework as I check agendas and we make a small list of reminders about assignment completion in the AM.
6.  Study multiplication tables to 10 daily for 10-15 minutes with your child if possible.  There are also some free sites on Internet whereby your child could practise as well.
7.  Poetry- Haikus- first draft due Thursday- most finished in class.
8.  Math- adding with regrouping review quiz- Wednesday. We look over in class and sometimes make cue cards to study.
9.  A little studying at home for tests is expected  for all subjects, but at this grade, I try to teach them how to study and help them in class to do this.
10.  OCT. 9- 9 AM to 2:30 PM- Salmon Run Field trip- forms will go home soon.  Sorry parents cannot fit on the bus, but are welcome to meet us there!

Friday 26 September 2014

Thursday, Sept. 25

1.  Multiplication practice- 10-15 minutes per night.   Even the grade 5s still need lots or review at home as their quiz scores indicate they are somewhat "rusty".  Grade 4s may have memorized their multiplication tables a little or a lot last year.  It is very important that they begin to try to get those memorized.   It is the main homework any of my students will ever have.  We study at school aloud but they need the extra practice at home. Thanks!

2.  My students are organizing the Terry Fox Run and have been doing a great job of collecting money each morning from classes.  Please send in a donation if you are able to; our school goal is $1000.00.  We are running next Friday, Oct. 3 at 9:20 AM from our Gym.  Feel free to join us for this short but meaningful run.

Friday, Sept. 26

1.  Thank you for signing agenda each night for about a month.  I will try not to ask for much more signed other than certain tests.
2.  Verification forms are coming home today; please look, sign and send back for offfice.
3.  Spelling Review words- need to have 20 done; most kids finished in class.
4.  Oct. 15/16th- 12:30 on...sign up closer to the date.
5.  I'll send home a newsletter/daily schedule as soon as the school works out Computer, Gym and Library times.  If you have any questions until then, please call or mail me.
6.  Scholastic orders are due next Friday, Oct. 3.

Tuesday 23 September 2014

Tuesday, Sept. 23

1.  It's great to have your child in my class!

2.  I do not get the BLOG done every day.  Students need to be responsible to write out agenda accurately each day and get it signed by a parent.  That way, they can be responsible to take home the books they need.  Sometimes the server is down or I am in meetings and do not get a chance to write the BLOG.  Thanks for your understanding!

3.  I work every day now and will be taking Mrs. Kossey's name off the BLOG soon.

4.  If you feel like sending Kleenex boxes, please do.

5.  Please send your child with gym strip and runners each day.  My class does run/do exercises every morning of the year outside or in the gym for about 15 minutes.  Please send a one line note if your child cannot participate for some reason.  If he or she cannot run in AM, he or she will usually not participate in Gym either.

6.  E-mail me at sabraham@sd73.bc.ca or phone the school if you need to talk, get something clarified, etc..  Students work super hard each day and are fairly tired at end of day.  The main reason they would get homework is if they are off-task or did not ask for help if required.  I have 29 students and try to get around the room a gazillion times but sometimes, I still miss kids that need help.  They may also have to study for a test. Whatever the reason, let's work together to make sure they like coming to school and do not have an overwhelming amount of homework.

Monday 22 September 2014

Monday, Sept. 22, 2014

Welcome back!  It will be so nice to see your children today!  I wish I could keep them for the whole year.  However, most will be moving on to a new teacher.  We are not sure of anything yet, so keep tuned and your child should figure out what class they will be assigned to on Tuesday, Sept. 23.  This is only temporary for some students as there is always movement in September.  I wish you all peace at home as the new school year starts.

Friday 6 June 2014

Friday, June 6

Monday, Feb. 24

1.  I am glad everyone enjoyed the Carnival.  Thanks to PAC for allowing this to happen with all their extra work and time!

2.  Character Descriptions- 50 marks.  Most kids have handed in and need to get their evaluation signed and returned. Unfortunately there are some kids who are falling behind or losing their projects.  Reports cards are being written right now so I have been encouraging students to get their projects in!

3.  Multiplication quiz signd and returned by Tuesday.

4.  Holes group projects- due Tuesday so students can practice for presentations Thursday and Friday.
5.  Holes movie- Friday- students can bring popcorn or a snack if they like while we watch the movie and compare the novel to it.

6.  Creative Writing short stories- First drafts have been written. I am conferencing with all students so they can begin their final drafts and prepare for the illustrations.  Despite many reminders, many students did not heed the criteria expected, especially for the endings.  When I told them it was not as easy to attain "A" and "B" marks in second term (because there is less review, more new skills), they are starting to now understand what I mean.

Friday, Feb. 14

1.  Thank you very much to all those that were able to send in vegetables, fruit, cookies, candy, etc. for our Valentines Party!  We had a very competitive/loud fun Math relay game and then we composed our Love Earth songs and performed them in front of the class.  The students are always very grateful and thankful and I really all parents; you are obviously teaching your kids some strong morals and values.

2.  Students are working hard on their Holes project.  They have completed their Holes vocabulary; some chose to redo (which I do not always allow, but I did this time) and received extra half points toward their mark.  They have had 7 sessions in groups to work on a group project.  We were going to have Friday, Feb. 21 be our special day for Novel Study presentations, but there is a Pro-D.  Thus, we will  do presentations on Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 24 and 25.  They also have 2 character descriptions to finish next week. Then we will watch the movie to see the differences between the novel and movie.

There was no homework for the students except if they were overdue on anything.

Skating is also this Wednesday, Feb. 19, 10:45 until 12:00.  That means Mrs. Kossey and the students and drivers will leave from the school at 10ish and return at 12:20 or so.  Drivers who indicated they could drive are:  Cali-2, Brielle-2, Emily-3, Aleah-2, Kendra-6, Gareth-5, Samuel-3, Devaki-3, Jaime-2, Trevor- 4.

That is enough for 32 students so if a parent has to cancel, please let Mrs. Kossey know by Tuesday.  Thanks so much for helping drive!

Thursday 23 January 2014

Thanks for trying to read the BLOG each day!  Again, I noticed that Tuesday's blog did not register.  That is why it is also important for students to fill out agendas correctly and bring home their work.

Thursday, Jan. 22

1.  Holes vocabulary project is due Monday. Students have been told that I am OK with them having a peer or a parent check over their work before handing in for a letter grade. I am also OK with anyone typing the project if anyone is  able. Obviously, it is more beneficial if the student types it, but since they are not being marked on their typing abilities, it does not matter to me who types it.  Each of the words is worth 4 points...2 for definition and 2 for sentence.  Being comprehensive and accurate is important, as I explained to the students.

2.  Math quiz #3 on division Friday.  Harder division questions start Monday, along with short division lessons.  It is very important that kids who are slow on their multiplication really go at studying in next couple weeks!  This is so important to their division and to their confidence and motivation in Math for the rest of their life.

3.  Skating is not until Feb. 7th (with Mrs. A) and Feb. 19th (with Mrs. Kossey).  However, here are the drivers. If you have to cancel, it looks like tere are a couple extra drivers for each trip; just make sure you call and let me know. Thanks!  Feel free to skate with us! Kids will be able to play hockey with a felt puck; sticks will need to go in a parent's car.
